An immersive soundscape made for the "Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Pontus Hulten" exhibition
Le Cyclop is a monumental sculpture by Jean Tinguely in the shape of a giant head, standing in the middle of the woods at Milly-la-Forêt, in the Essonne region. The construction of this concrete and metal monster began in 1969 and lasted 25 years, with the collaboration of numerous artists, foremost among them Niki de Saint Phalle.
La composante acoustique retrouvée dans de nombreuses oeuvres de Jean Tinguely est centrale à cette pièce, un « voyage imaginaire » par Yann Brecy et Luca Bagnoli pensé comme un paysage sonore du Cyclop. Sont tirés de la sculpture de 22 mètres de haut les sons de ses mécanismes, engrenages, représentation théâtrale, tintements métalliques et la machinerie en perpétuel mouvement qui caractérise l’oeuvre collective du Cyclop.
From around twenty hours of recordings of all the sonic events (the creaking of gears, the clashing of balls and metal rods, etc.), an 8-minute imaginary journey through the monster was created.
L’installation, disposée dans un grand escalier, invite les participants de l’exposition à prendre conscience de l’immensité, la verticalité et la simultanéité de l’œuvre au travers de sa composante sonore. La création se développe dans l’espace de l’installation et de l’exposition, discutant ainsi avec les autres œuvres, mécaniques et sonores, présentes à proximité.
This acousmatic work was composed solely from sounds recorded from Tinguely’s Cyclop. A reconstruction of the monster and a journey through its entrails, it immerses the listener in a three-dimensional sonic exploration of the structure—revealing both the vastness that defines it and the usually inaudible, poetic details within.
Jouée une première fois sous la forme d’une pièce ambisonique au Hangar PirelliBiccoca à Milan en janvier 2025, dans le cadre du concert Electroacoustic circus in the imaginary of Jean Tinguely, l’oeuvre s’installe aujourd’hui dans le Grand Palais pour donner vie aux sons du Cyclop.
